Oil Painting – 100×70 cm

Inspired by: Matilda, from the novel Dasem by Amr Tarek

And the Darkness Answered First is a quiet, introspective work that explores the fragile space between surrender and longing. Inspired by the character of Matilda, the painting captures a suspended moment  one that exists just before resolution, where emotion lingers without conclusion.

Rendered in warm, moody tones, the composition is defined by stillness and restraint. The soft illumination against deep shadow creates a tension between vulnerability and inner strength, allowing the figure to remain both present and unreachable. Nothing here is theatrical; everything is deliberate.

Rather than narrating a story, the work invites contemplation. It speaks to solitude, unanswered questions, and the subtle weight of emotional memory. The gesture is minimal, yet charged  suggesting that sometimes it is not the figure who speaks first, but the darkness surrounding her.

This limited-edition print extends the life of the original painting into a quieter, more intimate format, preserving its atmosphere and emotional depth while remaining faithful to the integrity of the original work.
